In which we play with power tools…

So much progress in so little time! Where to begin?

How ’bout with the “kitchen”?

We found both the cabinet base and countertop (with sink attached) at a local re-use organization. The cabinet base has a few minor cosmetic dings, as you can see in the closer look above, which won’t matter much by the time I’m done with it. The counter and sink are Corian, which was a great find since it’s strong, lightweight, and durable. Mini-fridge is just that- a mini fridge we already had!

Installation was relatively simple- we used six brackets to attach the cabinet to the floor and walls (hello, power drill!), then cut the counter to the depth we wanted (hello, circular saw!), used silicone adhesive to mount the counter to the cabinet and seal it. We also built out a frame for the left side of the counter (see side view below). Swapping out the handles on the cabinets to the longer ones will give us a place to hang towels to dry, and the scrap countertop from cutting to the right depth was just enough to trim up as a backsplash as well.

The bed frame also went in this weekend. This platform is intended to fit a queen size mattress, which may seem excessive but, again, customizing to our interests! I don’t take sleep lightly! The installation method was slotting two 2x6s for slats, then attaching them to the wall. Four floor-to-frame braces were added just for added support. 2×4 slats were cut to length, then the plywood panels were attached to the slats. This will allow the bed to slide up and out of the supports, which will allow us to remove the bed relatively easily when needed.

The frame itself is higher than we initially expected, needing to be installed above one of the electrical outlets, but does provide enough space underneath for an additional bedroll if needed and storage space the rest of the time.

Final addition- a bench seat with storage! This will have a cushion on top, and will provide valuable storage space along with seating space.

All in all, not a bad effort for the weekend! We also got some of the electrical system components in, but that’s for a future post. Until next time!
